Reubke Organ Sonata

Earlier this week I fulfilled a ‘bucket list’ dream of mine – to play the mammoth Organ Sonata of Julius Reubke on the Grand Organ of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

The instrument has always seemed to me to be ideally suited to the tonal demands of the music – even more so since its recent renovation by organ builders Harrison and Harrison Ltd of Durham. To view the specification of the instrument click here.

Thanks are due to Richard Lea, the Cathedral organist, for allowing me to use the instrument and the staff and volunteers at the Cathedral for making me feel so welcome.

The playing is far from perfect – I am not a full time recording artist(!) – and for the most part I have left any little slips in as part of the performance.

There are, however, a small number of edits where I had to re-record sections due to a particularly loud extraneous noise, a passing conversation being too clearly picked up by the microphones or simply a disastrous stop change by me!

So, sit back and enjoy one of the best pieces of music for organ played on one of the best instruments in the world!
